Check numbers twice, and always give them a scale
A figure means nothing on its own. Two million is either enormous or trivial depending on what it is next to, so verify it and then frame it.
Numbers carry a false air of authority. Because a figure looks precise, readers tend to accept it without question, which is exactly why a wrong number does so much damage. A single misplaced decimal, a confusion between million and billion, a percentage that should have been a percentage point, and your careful story is now spreading a falsehood that looks like a fact. Numbers demand more checking than words, not less.
Check every number twice, from the original source. Do not copy a figure from another article, because if they got it wrong you will inherit the error and pass it on. Go to the report, the filing, the dataset, the official release, and confirm the number where it first appeared. Then read the surrounding text to make sure you understand what the number actually measures.
Understand the unit before you write the number. A figure is meaningless until you know what it counts, over what period, and for whom. Is this annual or monthly, gross or net, per person or in total, this country or the whole region. Many number errors are not arithmetic at all, they are unit errors, where the reporter reported a true figure as if it measured something else.
A number alone is not news, it is a data point waiting for context. Two million of something is enormous or trivial depending entirely on what it sits next to. Your job is to give the reader the comparison that makes the figure mean something. Without that frame, even a correct number leaves the reader unable to tell whether they should be alarmed, reassured, or indifferent.
The most useful comparison is usually to what came before. A budget of two million tells the reader little. A budget of two million, up from eight hundred thousand last year, tells a story. Change over time turns a static figure into a direction, and direction is what readers actually want to know. Whenever you can, show where the number was and where it is going.
Scale a number to something a person can picture. A large figure becomes real when you translate it into human terms: per household, per day, as a share of the total, or against a familiar benchmark. "Enough to fund the school system for a year" or "about the size of a mid sized town" gives the reader a handhold. Abstract magnitude means nothing, human scale means everything.
Be careful with percentages, because they hide as much as they reveal. A one hundred percent increase sounds dramatic until you learn it was a rise from two cases to four. A large base with a small percentage change can matter far more than a small base with a huge one. Whenever you use a percentage, ask whether the reader also needs the raw numbers underneath it to understand what really happened.
Mind the difference between correlation and cause, because numbers invite the reader to leap from one to the other. Two things rising together is not proof that one caused the other. When you place two figures side by side, you are implying a relationship, so be sure the relationship is real, and if it is merely a coincidence in time, say so plainly rather than letting the juxtaposition mislead.
Round with honesty. Precision that the source does not support is a kind of lie. If an estimate is roughly three million, do not write 3,041,286 as though it were counted exactly, and if a figure is a genuine hard count, do not round it into vagueness. The level of precision you use is itself a claim about how certain the number is, so match it to the truth.
Watch for the number that is technically true but deeply misleading. A figure can be accurate and still create a false impression through the frame around it, a cherry picked start date, a selective comparison, a total that ignores the relevant per person adjustment. Your job is not only to avoid false numbers but to avoid true numbers arranged to deceive. If a figure would mislead a fair reader, it fails, correct or not.
Say where the number came from, right next to the number. Attribution is not just for quotes. When a reader sees "according to the national statistics office" or "based on the company filing," they can weigh the source and, if they wish, check it. A figure with no visible origin asks the reader to trust it on faith, and careful readers do not.
When you are genuinely unsure, write the uncertainty rather than hiding it. Estimates, projections, and early counts are legitimate, but they are not the same as settled facts, and dressing them up as certainties is how errors spread. Words like "estimated," "preliminary," and "projected" are not weakness, they are precision about the limits of what is known.
Handled with care, numbers are one of the most powerful tools you have, because they let a reader grasp a scale that words alone cannot convey. Handled carelessly, they are one of the fastest ways to mislead people while looking authoritative. Check twice, understand the unit, and always give the figure a frame. A number the reader can trust and picture is worth more than ten numbers thrown on the page.
